PERSONALITY:
"A just rule, with just laws... those are the true duties of a king!"

Saber is the very personification of chivalry, a model knight who possesses all the qualities one would come to expect with such a revered title as the King of Knights. Valiant and unwavering in her righteous ideals, she is truly an idealistic 'Heroic spirit'. However, underneath the honor and glory of her station, is a girl who spent her life devoted entirely to the greater good and the success of others. As such she never truly had a chance to live for herself or find her own identity as a person, having always conformed to what others needed her to be. A King, a knight, a servant, a tool to be used to achieve a set goal..

Saber's true identity is Arturia Pendragon, or King Arthur of Camelot. In this version of the tale the king was secretly a woman, and such a turn of events gave birth to many hardships. Born into a time when war and chaos were imminent, she was predestined to be her country's savior as heir to the King of Britain. She would have been denied the right to rule due to her gender, which lead to her being raised in secret all while preparing for the day she would fulfill the prophecy and take her rightful place on the throne. As a young girl Arturia was described as a whimsical youth, brimming with innocence and hope. If compared side by side to her present day self, it would seem impossible that the two could be the same person. This is because choosing the path of kingship meant sacrificing her humanity and becoming something in-human. Knowing this, she still chose to follow the path of a king and throw away her identity as a woman.

"A king should make any sacrifice to ensure his country's prosperity."

As king she put the needs of her country before her own, her devotion to them as their ruler was of the highest importance. She ruled Camelot with an iron fist, adhering strictly to the knight's code of chivalry and gaining the respect and allegiance of many knights who would come together to form the Knights of the Round Table under her leadership. Famous for exhibiting great valor and honor on the battlefield she never cowered in the face of her enemies. She faced her opponents head on, striking down her enemies from the front lines of warfare. Her boundless courage and determination greatly inspired her subjects, and earned her their unwavering loyalty. Though many lives were sacrificed on her path to victory, no one doubted her ideals as being noble and correct. She kept to the oath she made from the beginning of her rule, that a king is not human and as such can not protect it's people with human emotions. Such conviction undoubtedly paved the path for countless victories, as well as her kingdom's eventual downfall.

In order to maintain her image as king, she could not readily place her trust in others due to the secretive nature of her true identity. Thus she remained aloof, keeping everyone at arms length to secure the welfare of her kingdom. However, such behavior came with it's own consequences. Unable to truly confide in others or relate to people on an emotional level, her most loyal knights and subjects began to turn against her, causing civil unrest within the kingdom. They criticized her lack of warmth and understanding towards the people of the country over which she governed, questioning her ability to properly rule over them as a result. One of her subjects even went as far as to state "the king does not understand human emotions." Ultimately her isolated methods of living brought Arturia to her untimely demise after ten years of rule. Faced with the impending destruction of her country, with her dying breath she offered her services as a heroic spirit to obtain the holy grail. Intending to rewrite history and give Britain the chance to flourish under a better ruler in her stead.

"My sword will henceforth be at your side. Your fate is henceforth my fate."

As a servant she exhibits all the same qualities she had in life, pledging devotion to her master (much in the same way she had for her country) immediately upon being summoned. However, during Fate/Zero Saber struggled with her allegiance towards her master Kiritsugu due to their differing ideologies and methods in their quest to obtain the grail. Kiritsugu was not opposed to lying or cheating to fulfill his goals, such practices Saber could not approve of and their differing principles made them incompatible as partners. She was repeatedly disrespected by Kiritsugu who refused to speak directly to her or acknowledge her as anything more than a weapon to be used for his benefit. He betrayed her trust countless times, one notable example being when he manipulated her into distracting Lancer so that he could blackmail his master into ordering Lancer's suicide. His actions were beyond disgraceful and Saber felt dishonored as a knight in helping him accomplish this, even if she was not aware of his plans. Not only that, but it might as well have been a slap in the face to Saber, to learn her master was not confident in her ability to defeat Lancer on her own in a fair fight.

Saber was further traumatized in the fourth war when she was forced to kill her dearest friend, and loyal knight Sir Lancelot when it is revealed that he had been summoned as the Berserker class servant. Who then confessed with his dying breath that his dissent into madness was due to her lack of judgement against the past crimes he had committed against her by having an affair with Saber's queen, Guinevere. "Had your anger judged me, I might not have fallen onto the path of madness in my search for atonement." Hearing this, Saber blamed herself for failing Lancelot both as a king as well as a friend. The endless cycle of betrayal continued when Kiritsugu forced Saber to destroy the grail with the use of his command seals in the final battle, without explanation and before she had a chance to have her wish granted.

"Perhaps this is all a punishment for a king who couldn't understand others..."

During the Banquet of Kings, Rider had told Saber her kingship was based on false ideals, that she only ever saved her people but never truly lead them. Those words struck deep and while she refused to accept that truth at the time, she later came to grips with it during her final moments in the war following her battle with Lancelot. She wept for him, and all of her knights when she returned to the bloody hill, wholeheartedly convinced that she should not have been king. Such events left massive emotional scars and caused Saber a great deal of grief. Plagued by the guilt of failing her country in the past as well as her faults in the fourth war, she strives to make amends for her mistakes when summoned into the fifth war. Though she is still extremely wary of trusting others, she develops a soft spot for Shirou and grows attached to him as a person who shares some of her own principles of wishing to help others.

During the Unlimited Blade Works route Saber is able to find some measure of closure with her past mistakes and her kingship by overseeing the struggle between Shirou and Archer (The heroic spirit Emiya, comprised of his ideals as a hero of justice). Archer's wish is very similar to her own in that he wants to erase his mark on history because he feels he failed on his path to becoming a hero of justice. Seeing him trying to accomplish the same end that she herself desires, she finally realizes that she is going about things the wrong way. Just as Archer eventually arrives at the conclusion that his life was not a mistake, Saber's eyes open to this realization as well. Thus the cycle of self hatred and blame eases toward a close and she's able to make peace with her past decisions even if she still mourns for the loss of her country and mistakes she made as it's King.

"It is the story of a little girl I would not recognize, one who no longer has anything to do with me."

Her general temperament is easily regarded as one of an silent observer, extremely guarded and ever watchful of her surroundings. She does not typically show much emotion in her expression, taking on the role of a stone faced heroine. Her overly reserved nature has lead to others viewing her as apathetic and emotionless, which is what also inevitably lead to her downfall as king. Though her outward disposition can most generally be described as cold and calculating she does show a warmer side to herself on rare occasion, mainly through her interactions with Shirou in Fate/Stay Night. He is the first person to treat Saber as a human rather than a servant or a weapon. He values Saber's life before his own, which is the opposite of how a Master should view their Servant. He also insists on protecting Saber and tells her she shouldn't fight because she is a girl. Saber takes this as an insult, and proclaims she is a servant before she is a girl and that gender does not matter. While seemingly unflappable in nature, she does retain some essence of her younger self. Showing a fondness for cute things as well as harboring a humorously humongous appetite. She tends to sink into the background of most social situations, often distant by nature, a side effect of the burdens she shouldered in solitude in her life as a ruler. Such a trait gives her the appearance of a more refined nature and she is repeatedly described as beautiful and elegant, despite her opinion of herself being the opposite.

Saber has a difficult time blending in, not only does she attract attention for her traditional mannerisms but her way of speaking is also quite formal, which is to be expected considering the era of time she grew up in. This can lead to her sometimes feeling awkward during social interaction. Reverting to that introverted state of mind works as her safety net, keeping others from getting too close. Still she most often leaves others with a positive impression of herself, her high ranking charisma allows her to get along with most people relatively easily. While generally upholding herself to the image a perfect gentlemen she does have a bit of a childish quirk that rears it's head whenever she is offended or upset. In addition to this she has been shown to enjoy witty banter with her opponents on the battlefield, responding in kind whenever she is taunted or teased with quips of her own.

To summarize, Saber embodies many admirable qualities that outshine even the tragic burdens of her past. She is prideful in her abilities and retains an honorable sense of justice that endears her to many. Saber is both strong willed and selfless, to a fault. Though she has made many mistakes in life, she still believes her ideals and wish to protect others is not wrong. This is why she will go to great lengths to protect what is important to her, even if she is uncertain what the right way to go about it truly is. In the end she only wishes for others to be happy, and now that her conscious is somewhat lightened from the heavy burden of her past failures, perhaps she herself could find happiness as well.

ABILITIES/SKILLS: Brace for the TL;DR

Saber has many powers, some of which have been granted to her as a Servant as well as a good deal of special abilities retained from her previous life. The most logical way to go about this is to first explain what exactly her title as a Servant entails. Servants are heroic spirits of the past summoned by the Holy Grail to fight alongside their masters in the Holy Grail wars. The Grail is an omnipotent wishing device that can grant any single desire of the one who wields it. Typically seven servants are summoned for each war, provided there are enough masters available, and fight to the death until one is left standing. That servant will have their wish granted, as well as their master's.

Servants are divided into the seven classes; Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin and Berserker. They are specifically categorized based on whatever skills and/or weapons they were most associated with in their legends. The Grail grants them superhuman level abilities combined together with their own fabled prowess to create a league of highly formidable magic warriors. Because of this, it is next to impossible for a human to inflict any form of damage on them, placing Servants in a league of their own entirely. Servants are tied to the present world by their masters and the magical energy supplied from them known as prana, without it a servant will waste away into nothingness. It is also of importance to note that while Servants typically have the ability to de-materialize, or become invisible as a means for lessening prana usage, Saber does not.

Servant Stats:

The Type Moon Wikia details all servants in depth, but I'm going to focus on the Saber class and Arturia's individual abilities.

Class Skill:

• Saber Servants inherently have high rankings in all categories, but are subsequently effected by their master's rankings as a Mage. Among class skills, Arturia's most notable is her A-rank magic resistance. While this is typical for a Saber class servant, Arturia takes this to extremes. Only high level magic can harm her leaving her practically invulnerable to modern magi. Saber servants are also gifted with the Riding Ability, allowing them to mount any from of beast or vehicle and instantaneously know how to properly operate it in the same way as the Rider class. Which means despite not having cars or motorcycles during her time, Arturia was still able to pilot both in Fate/Zero with ease. The Saber class is considered to be made up of the most esteemed combatants, composed mainly of melee fighters who were famous for their swordsmanship. It is also recognized as one of the three Knight classes along with the Archer and Lancer classes.

Personal Skill:

• Saber herself possesses a great finesse with a number of different weapons, having fought in numerous battles and emerged victorious many times. She is extremely agile, excelling in the art of close combat as repeatedly demonstrated through her intimidating display of dexterity on the battlefield. Saber typically attacks head on and uses what is referred to as a "Mana Burst" to supercharge her movements with magical energy for a more powerful and effective offense. Another handy trick is Saber's ability to use mana to summon a magical suit of armor around her at any time. More useful still is her ability to convert this armor into energy to strengthen her attacks, at the cost of lowered protection.

• In life Saber's body was blessed by the Lady of the Lake, the same elemental spirit who gifted her with Excalibur and as a result was bestowed the ability to walk on any waters surface, no matter how shallow or deep. The blessing also impedes any magic using water as it's elemental base, basically she is protected from being harmed by water.

• As a king and noble spirit she possesses extraordinary charisma which she can use to command an army, in addition to a remarkable degree of intuition bordering on precognition that has helped her to survive and counter many fatal blows by the skin of her teeth. She has also exhibited limited healing capabilities, though this has been proven a mere superficial talent as she needs assistance from her master in order to heal anything more than a minor flesh wound.

Noble Phantasms:

All Servants are given a trump card known as a Noble Phantasm. Noble Phantasms are the physical manifestations of each hero's legend. Most heroic spirits will possess only one Noble Phantasm, though there have been some known to possess more. Saber in actuality has four, though only two are accessible to her.

Excalibur: Saber's main Noble Phantasm is Excalibur, a holy sword whose greatest attack is forged by the collective wishes of mankind and fueled through a conversion of mana into photoelectric energy. This produces a massively destructive wave of energy that is released from the tip when swung in the form of a charging, blinding light. Also known as her FINAL BLOW / ALL OR NOTHING attack, given that it's use would reveal her identity and leave her vulnerable to defeat. It also uses a great deal of prana to power it, which would leave Saber in a crippled state if she does not have a proper source of magical energy. ( Here is a short 3 minute clip of Excalibur in action!!!)

Invisible Air: Her second, though more akin to magecraft than an "ultimate weapon", is her ability to conceal her blade with Invisible Air. A technique that compresses multiple layers of wind and air that can be used to hide her weapon's visibility. Giving her the ability to mask both Excalibur's length and identity, which proves a great advantage over her opponents in battle. In addition to this Invisible Air can also project a powerful release of wind in the form of an intense gust. She can also use it to form a barrier around herself in protection, or as a tool to decrease air resistance in order to enhance speed.

INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
• Excalibur
• Magic Armor

FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars.

REASON: Arturia built her legacy upon being an idealistic king, someone who dreamed of a prosperous future for her kingdom and whose goals were fueled solely by the greater good. She understood sacrifices must be made in order to better her country as a whole. Her instincts are what guided her decisions as a ruler, and she devoted her life entirely to the dream of a perfect kingdom where everyone was smiling.

TATTOO: The constellation Draco, wrapping her right wrist with the "head" of the dragon centered in her palm.

NETWORK:
[while she may have had the advantage of The Grail supplying her with knowledge of the world's advanced technology when she participated in the War, she does not, however, have that luxury here.

Saber just sort of stares at the compass communicator, fiddling with it quite unsuccessfully for some time before finally getting it to work correctly... she hopes. She's from the fifth century, okay? it's like handing an infant an apple watch... only she's not gonna put it in her mouth to see if it's edible.

Greetings Fellden, it is my understanding that we have been summoned here to assist with the ongoing struggle for power between the neighboring factions. I myself have been appointed to the Court of Stars.

[NO SECRET AGENTS HERE!!!]

Should any of my fellow faction members find themselves willing and able to brief me in regards to our progress in the war and the current state of affairs, I would appreciate it greatly.

[a thoughtful pause.]

Furthermore, I am particularly interested in any information pertaining to the history of this world as I am most unsatisfied with what vague knowledge they have chosen to supply us with.

[something just smells fishy, okay? and it's not the fishcakes Saber just devoured off screen either.]

Any information on the aforementioned topics would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

[end feed.]
